Women in Armenia have had an enormous impact on their country. They have overcome many challenges to achieve equal rights. Since 1919, when Armenia gained independence, women have had the same rights as men, including the right to vote. These advances have allowed many Armenian women to participate actively in the life of their country.
They have excelled in literature, politics, music, sports, and many other fields. In 1991, Armenia ensured equal treatment between men and women in its constitution. The Role of Women in Traditional Armenian Society
Previously, Armenian women had few rights, even with ancient laws that tried to protect them. These laws affirmed the superiority of men and prohibited divorce, ignoring situations of violence. Although in the 12th century, the theologian, pedagogue, mythologist, and jurist Mkhitar Gosh, author of the first Armenian code, spoke of equal rights between men and women, and in the case of divorce, the woman and the man had to share the property. He defended women’s interests, planned compensation for husbands who humiliated and beat their wives.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the poor status of Armenian women was criticized. However, some older women could have important roles, although they were not allowed to divorce.
Armenian Feminists and Their Fight for Equality
Since the 20th century, feminists like Sibil have fought for a fair social environment for women. In 2007, the “gender quota law” encouraged female political participation.

The problem of sex-selective abortion in Armenia is due to preferences for having male children. There are still more young women than men due to male emigration in search of work.

Despite the challenges, Armenian women have made a mark. In literature, writers like Khosrovidukht of Goghtn and feminist novelists of the 19th and 20th centuries are examples. In politics, women like Hranush Hakobyan have held prominent roles. The arts include talents like Armenian opera singers Gohar Gasparyan.
Women of Armenia: Empowerment and Achievements
Armenian women face challenges but have achieved much in empowerment and rights. Events like Women’s Month and campaigns like “For You, Women” provide vital support. For example, the Surb Astvatsamayr Medical Center provided free treatments in March 2010, and today all medical centers belonging to the municipality offer free diagnosis and treatment from March until the end of April. This gesture helped many women receive important medical care.
Historically, prominent Armenian women have excelled in various fields. From ancient princesses to current politicians and athletes, their talent is evident. Sahakdukht, Yesayan, and Avdalyan are some notable figures. They showcase the achievements of Armenian women throughout the centuries.
Organizations and activists have improved the situation of women in Armenia. They work for equality, education, and to stop domestic violence. Armenian women abroad also help, creating solidarity connections like the singer Cher of Armenian descent.
Despite the challenges, Armenian women show resilience and determination. They are overcoming obstacles and changing the future for all. Their empowerment is not only morally essential but also key to Armenia’s progress and well-being.

Today, the achievements of Armenian women span various fields, reflecting remarkable evolution and progress both in Armenia and the diaspora. These achievements are evident in areas such as politics, science, culture, business, and social activism. Women are everywhere in Politics and Government, Science and Technology, Culture and Arts, Business and Entrepreneurship, Social Activism and Human Rights, and Sports.
